ABA Therapy FAQ for Parents

Short, plain answers to the questions families ask us most.

Common questions

What is ABA therapy?

ABA (applied behavior analysis) helps children learn new skills and reduce behaviors that get in the way of daily life. Your child’s plan is built around their own needs.

Who is ABA therapy for?

ABA is most often used to support people with autism or related developmental needs. Every plan is built around the individual’s strengths and needs.

What ages do you serve?

Children, teens and young adults, up to age 30.

Does my child need a diagnosis first?

Yes. We need a diagnostic evaluation first. It can come from a psychologist (PhD), a neurologist or a psychiatrist. If you don’t have one yet, our intake coordinator can help arrange it.

Do you take insurance?

Yes. We work with Medicaid, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Evernorth – Cigna, Sunshine and Health Network One. We also accept self-pay and offer a sliding scale. Plans change, so please call (305) 975-9277 and we will check yours. We handle the coverage checks and authorizations for you.

What documents do I need to start?

Always needed

  • An order (prescription or referral) for ABA services
  • A letter of medical necessity
  • Your child’s medical records, such as from a pediatrician or neurologist
  • The diagnostic evaluation

If it applies to your child

  • IEP (Individualized Education Program)
  • 504 plan
  • IFSP from Early Steps, Florida’s early intervention program
  • School reports
  • A letter from a teacher or school
  • Tests completed at school, such as Vanderbilt or Vineland
  • Any other school evaluation

Not sure what you have? Call us at (305) 975-9277 and we will go through it with you.

How do I get started?

Call (305) 975-9277 or fill out the registration form. Our intake coordinator will walk you through each step.

How does approval work?

After your documents and diagnostic evaluation are in, our intake coordinator collects the location and schedule you need. A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) then contacts you to set up your child’s assessment, and you complete two short questionnaires by email first. After the assessment, you review and sign it, and we send it to your insurance to approve therapy hours.

What happens after insurance approves?

Therapy sessions begin, based on your child’s assessment. We set the schedule with you, a BCBA oversees the plan, and a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) works with your child.

What does a first session look like?

The BCBA assessment is the first step, before sessions start. Once insurance approves hours, sessions begin based on that assessment. Early sessions focus on getting to know your child and starting on their goals.

How many hours will my child get?

It depends on your child’s needs and what insurance approves after the assessment. Our office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, but therapy is scheduled at the times that work for you.

Where does therapy happen?

Wherever your child needs it: at home, at school, or in the community. Occasionally sessions are at our office. We confirm the location with you at intake.

Who will work with my child?

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) works with your child one-on-one. A BCBA designs the plan and supervises the RBT every week.

What is my role as a parent?

You are part of the team. Your BCBA coaches you on strategies to use at home so progress carries over between sessions.

What to expect

Every child is unique, so we build your child’s plan around their needs. We work closely with your family, adjust the plan as your child grows, and keep you involved throughout.

Where do you serve families?

We are based in Dania Beach and serve families in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.

Is ABA right for my child?

Your child’s pediatrician is a good first step. We are happy to talk through what to expect, but we can’t give medical advice by phone or email.
